MEET THE COUNCIL SPEAKER.
His job is quite unenviable.
As Council Speaker, Cllr Kgwediebotse David Chego must preside over Council meetings of Sekhukhune District Municipality.
For a multi-party Council, like Sekhukhune District Municipality’s, with six political parties, namely the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Democratic Alliance (DA) Socialist Agenda of Dispossessed Africans (SADA) the Bolsheviks Party and the South African Maintenance and Estate Beneficiaries Association (SAMEBA), striking a balance is no mean feat.
Considering the divergent political and ideological orientations of some of these political parties, and the inherently robust nature of Council deliberations, the new Council Speaker has his work cut out for him.
But Chego says, between 2016 and 2021 when he was Chief Whip in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality, there has not been a single Council meeting that was disrupted.
Chego holds a public relations qualification from the University of South Africa, certificate of programme management and development from University of Witwatersrand, a certificate in tourism capacity building for policy makers in local government from the University of Pretoria, several certificates from the University of Johannesburg and various others in several areas including risk management, community development and project management and local economic development.
Politically, Chego became member of the ANC Youth League in 1986. He held several official positions in the branch and sub-regional structures of the youth league, including as chairperson, secretary and even organiser between 1990 to 2001.
Between 2001 and 2004, Chego was elected member of the provincial executive committee of the ANC Youth League in Limpopo.
In 2007, after he had officially quit youth politics, Chego was elected as secretary of the Wifred Monama Branch of the ANC.
He held the position until 2016, and in the same year he became Chief Whip of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality.
He has led the ANC branch structures in various capacities since 1993 and was first elected councillor in December 2000, serving in different portfolios, in various capacities.
Following the 2021 local government elections, Chego became the Chief Whip of Sekhukhune District Municipality.
On 9 February 2022, he was elected Council Speaker.
In December 2021, he was elected as member of the regional executive committee of the ANC.
Currently, Chego is chairperson of the Makhuduthamaga ANC sub-region.
